Transforming the face of psychiatry, Judith Orloff, MD is an assistant clinical professor of Psychiatry at UCLA and author of the New York Times and international bestseller Emotional Freedom upon which a public television special is based. She synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality to achieve physical and emotional healing. She passionately asserts that we have the power to transform negative emotions and achieve inner peace. She offers practical strategies to overcome frustration, stress, and worry and teaches people how to quiet overactive minds that won't shut off.
Dr. Orloff, who comes from a family of 25 physicians, advocates "a democracy of healing," wherein every aspect of ourselves is granted a vote in the search for total health. She has been celebrated for her unique approach to mental well-being by proving that the links between physical, emotional, and spiritual health can't be ignored.
Dr. Orloff is accomplishing for psychiatry what physicians like Dean Ornish and Mehmet Oz have done for mainstream medicine." Dr. Orloff has spoken at medical schools, hospitals, universities, the American Psychiatric Association, Fortune Magazine's Most Powerful Women Summit, and alternative and traditional health forums-venues where she presents tools to doctors, patients, and everyday people. She graduated USC School of Medicine, completed a four year psychiatric residency program at UCLA, and currently mentors UCLA medical students and psychiatry-residents-in-training. She is on Natural Health Magazine's Advisory Board and Body and Soul Magazine had called Dr. Orloff "one of our nation's top doctors."
As a board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Orloff blends her traditional medical skills with intuition to enhance patient care. A new edition of her book "Second Sight" (Three Rivers Press, 2010) chronicles her challenges and triumphs embracing her own intuition and integrating it into medicine. Emotional Freedom (Harmony Books, March, 2009) helps readers liberate themselves from negative emotions and develop hope, compassion, and courage. It is a roadmap for those who are stressed, discouraged, or overwhelmed--and for those who are in a good emotional place but want to feel better. As Dr. Orloff shows, each day presents opportunities for us to be heroes in our own lives: to turn away from negativity, react constructively, and seize command of any situation. Her other bestsellers include Positive Energy, Guide to Intuitive Healing, and Second Sight, a trilogy of books exploring new breakthroughs in intuition, energy, and how to combat an epidemic of exhaustion overtaking our world. Positive Energy is a national and Los Angeles Times bestseller which has been translated into 24 languages.
In 1996, at the lowest point in his life, after moving into motel where he would live with his family for one year, John St. Augustine undertook a miraculous journey as he walked from Upper Michigan to Chicago and back. This journey of a thousand miles became a journey of discovery, a chance for John, whose business ventures had failed, to reinvent himself. It was on this walk that the idea for a radio show came to him; a show that would be a positive voice in a radio world saturated with cynicism and negativity. Despite the fact that he had no experience in radio, a local station gave him a chance; one hour a week for five weeks. That started a career that led to a daily show for 10 award-winning years and 5,000 guests from all walks of life. John's show was created with one underlying goal: to give listeners access to life-changing information that would inspire them to a greater life experience through conversation with extraordinary people.
John St. Augustine has been called "the new voice of America" by veteran broadcaster Bill Kurtis and "the most influential voice on radio" by best-selling author Cheryl Richardson. He is the author of Living an Uncommon Life: Essential Lessons from 21 Extraordinary People, and his next book, Every Moment Matters, will be released in fall 2009. His syndicated one-minute vignette, Powerthoughts!, airs daily on Oprah Radio Radio. He is a frequent contributor to the Chicken Soup for the Soul Series and a sought-after speaker on human potential and purpose. He's also the senior producer behind Dr. Mehmet Oz's, Jean Chatzky's and Bob Greene's shows on Oprah & Friends Radio.

Dawson Church, noted author and publisher, praises Drunk with Wonder
Dawson Church, whose brilliant and groundbreaking new book, The Genie in Your Genes, has just been released (and who is also the publisher of Elite Books), just reviewed Drunk with Wonder. Here's what he had to say:
"Author Steve Ryals begins with his personal story, one of moving through life's typical passages, like the 'summer of love' of 1967 San Francisco, then work and marriage. Through it all, he had a gnawing sense of depression, alienation, and loneliness, which he tried to cover up with substance abuse.
After decades, he decided to throw off his numbness, and undertook a fearless spiritual quest. It led him into communion with his higher self, and a complete and radical inner makeover. The bulk of the book is his dialogs with his higher self, and the answers he receives about topics as diverse as science, grace, and the ego. With a very clear and personal voice, his higher self emphasizes over and again the power of living from that source, rather than the limiting beliefs and habits we slip into so easily.
This warm and gentle invitation to 'bring the God within out of hiding,' can awaken us to the possibilities of a passionate connection with our individual higher selves on a daily basis. Highly recommended."
Steve has written dozens of blogs. He's also published a number of articles.

Willing to experience aloneness,
I discover connection everywhere;
Turning to face my fear,
I meet the warrior who lives within;
Opening to my loss,
I am given unimaginable gifts;
Surrendering into emptiness,
I find fullness without end.
Each condition I flee from pursues me.
Each condition I welcome transforms me
And becomes in itself transformed
Into its radiant jewel-like essence.
I bow to the one who has made it so,
Who has crafted this Master Game;
To play it is pure delight,
To honor it is true devotion.

Transformational Spaces
TRANSFORMATIONAL SPACE
A transformational space is a training environment. made up of webs of special kinds of relationships, safety, freedom and challenge.
Transformational spaces:
1. Provide a safe place away from ordinary identities and responsibilities.
2. Support experience and discovery of what is currently disowned and hidden.
3. Encourage creativity and experimentation.
4. Do not expect perfection.
5. Support other paths to development.
6. Provide techniques and practices that give us full, immediate experiences of ourselves.
7. Understand their own imperfections.
8.. Provide an anchor for community life that facilitates and fosters broad, creative interaction.
Zen
ZEN...
Zen is beyond words, a direct experience of the way things are, a personal journey to enlightenment at the end of which the seeker finds he is not a person and there was no journey.
Zen is knowing the mind, without using thought, living one's life by letting it live itself, choosing to have no preferences, becoming extraordinary by being nothing special at all. To understand Zen is to embrace paradox- to find the oneness that contains all opposites. Zen masters are sacrilegious and outrageous. They ridicule Zen teachings and each other because enlightenment is not something that can be taught, but only directly experienced for oneself. Zen cannot be understood by the mind, because it is about becoming aware of the mind itself.
These thoughts from the great Zen masters are not clever theories or philosophies, they are medicine. We suffer from the illness of the illusion of separateness. We believe that the world is full of discrete things, when in fact it is all one interconnected whole. We experience ourselves as conscious skin-bags living a transitory mortal life, when in fact we are the eternal mind of the universe.
Separateness is the sickness, and Zen is the cure. The entire world is a doorway to freedom, but people don't want to pass through. Zen is piling fresh fruit in a basket without a bottom. Zen is enjoying the ever-changing richness of existence. It is wonderment in the face of the miracle of life. It is witnessing things as they are. The holy man questioned for enjoying sex and money says he did it because, "So few are truly grateful for them."
Self Actualized Beings
Self-Actualized Beings
Have purpose, vision, and written goals
See current reality as an ally, not an enemy
Are constantly and deeply inquisitive
Are connected to life and others but remain unique
Realize they are a part of a larger creative process they influence but don't control
Remain in a continual learning mode, never arriving
Understand life is a process, a lifelong discipline
Find a way to be acutely aware of their ignorance and incompetence while maintaining a strong sense of self-esteem
See the journey as the reward
Hold deep values and commit to larger goals than the self
Continually strive for an accurate picture of reality
Develop a capacity for delayed gratification
Tell the truth
Allow the subconscious to do its job
"If" a poem by Rudyard Kipling
IF
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, not deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a self-realized [sic] one!
Rudyard Kipling
A Psalm of Life
A Psalm of Life
Tell me not in mournful numbers, life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers, and things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou are, to dust returnest, was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow find us farther than today.
Art is long, and time is fleeting, and our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating funeral marches to the grave.
In the world's broad field of battle, in the bivouac of life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead past bury its dead!
Act, - act in the living present! Heart within and God o'erhead! \
Lives of great ones all remind us we can make our life sublime,
And departing, leave behind us footprints on the sand of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another, sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked other, seeing shall take heart again.
Let us then be up and doing, with a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labor and to wait.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
You are sacred
"You are sacred. All peoples are sacred. Everything is sacred... We are all accountable and responsible for what we see around us, because, as we are all are connected and related, everything we do, think and say affects everything and everyone else."
Little Crow, 1933-2004
Yoga has lasted thousands of years because it works
Yoga has lasted thousands of years because it works
Hatha Yoga involves moving the body into different and novel positions and relationships. These changes in the use of the body bring about changes in the mind. Rather that trying to effect the mind directly, which is far more difficult, Hatha Yoga allows us to work from the tangible, familiar arena of the physical body.
...In using the body to transform the mind, the body is also transformed. It is recalibrated, revitalized, harmonized; brought to a functional peak, both anatomically and physiologically... It is these physical benefits that make it so popular. But, because these incidental physical benefits are connected to the intended psychological benefits, Hatha Yoga has a remarkable capacity to deliver far more than one might originally intend. Looking for a lithe, slim body, we also find a calm, clear mind. Hoping for strength and stamina, we also find increased determination and concentration. Wanting to be free of back pain, we find also freedom from compulsive anxiety. Seeking relief from asthma, we find also unlimited reserves of physical and mental energy. Trying to release tight shoulders and a stiff neck, we find also a new find of enthusiasm and joy.
Our ability to engage directly, fully and freely with the dynamic of life is hindered by deep layers of tension. Rigidity and inflexibility in body and mind restricts us to a limited range of responses to life. Hatha Yoga is designed to free us from all limitations.
Hatha Yoga is a remarkably fruitful process. Its practical aim is deep self-acceptance... it acts as a mirror to reveal to us exactly what we are on every level of our being. We can then use this revelation to harmonize these different aspects of ourselves, and live our lives from the rich, integrated wholeness of our being.
Dynamic Yoga, Godfrey Devereux
Love is
Love is presence with unconditional attention,
acceptance, appreciation, affection and allowing
others to be as they are.
I do not become good by trying to become good, that is just another manifestation of the egotistic confusion that resulted in more than 100,000,000 humans being killed by humans during the last century, I become good by allowing the good that is already within me to emerge. Tolle
The Way Of Transformation
The one who, being really on the Way, falls upon hard times in the world will not, as a consequence, turn to that friend who offers him refuge and comfort and encourages his old self to survive. Rather he will seek out someone who will faithfully and inexorably help him to risk himself, so that he may endure the suffering and pass courageously through it, thus making of it a "raft that leads to the far shore". Only to the extent that a man exposes himself over and over again to annihilation, can that which is indestructible arise within him. In this lies the dignity of daring.
Thus, the aim of practice is not to develop an attitude, which allows a man to acquire a state of harmony and peace wherein nothing can ever trouble him. On the contrary, practice should teach him to let himself be assaulted, perturbed, moved, insulted, broken and battered - that is to say, it should enable him to let go his futile hankering after harmony, surcease from pain, and a comfortable life in order that he may discover, in doing battle with the forces that oppose him, that which awaits him beyond the world of opposites.
The first necessity is that we should have the courage to face life, and to encounter all that is perilous in the world. When this is possible, meditation itself becomes the means by which we accept and welcome the demons, which arise from the unconscious - a process very different from the practice of concentration on some object as a protection against such forces. Only if we venture repeatedly through zones of annihilation can our contact with Divine Being, which is beyond annihilation, become firm and stable. The more we learn whole-heartedly to confront the world that threatens us with isolation, the more are the depths of the Ground of Being revealed and the possibilities of new life and Becoming opened.
Karlfried Graf von Durkheim
Not Here
There's courage involved if you want to become truth.
There is a broken-open place in a lover.
Where are those qualities of bravery and sharp compassion in this group?
What's the use of old and frozen thought?
I want a howling hurt.
This is not a treasury where gold is stored; this is for copper.
We alchemists look for talent that can heat up and change.
Lukewarm won't do.
Halfhearted holding back, well-enough getting by?
Not here.

Yoga cultivates cardiovascular health
"Yoga cultivates cardiovascular health, and musculoskeletal strength and flexibility. Yoga tunes up every organ system - respiratory, digestive, reproductive, lymphatic, and nervous. It cultivates the body's capacity to heal and dramatically reduces the negative effects of stress. With regular practice, we breathe better. We sleep. We digest our food better. We feel better.
Many experience moments of sharply increased mental focus and clarity...energy and stamina, emotional evenness and equanimity...a profound sense of well-being...and there are the not infrequent stories of truly miraculous healings - physical, emotional, spiritual."

Rousing the Sleeping Giant of American Womanhood
Dear Friends,
We often learn to understand ourselves more deeply by understanding where we come from and how we fit into our larger family dynamic. Yet that not only applies to our family of origin; it applies as well to our sex, our nationality and so forth.
As Western women, we're influenced in ways both large and small by historical forces of which we're sometimes only scarcely aware. During my SISTER GIANT seminar at the end of this month, I will be guiding participants through a journey of discovery both within and without....where we come from as women, where we are now, and where we can go from here.
A common anthropological characteristic of every advanced mammalian species that survives and thrives is the fierce behavior of the adult female when she senses a threat to her cubs. Our relative complacency while 17,000 children on our planet starve to death every day -- one every five seconds -- indicates a lack of positive intention, on the part of our species, literally to survive. The power we hold as American women is unmatched anywhere in the world, and our failure to use that power as effectively as we might on behalf of those who need us the most is a situation now ripe for change.
The goal of SISTER GIANT is to empower you to feel that you can be, should you choose, a major player in the loving transformation of the world. Tools both internal and external will be provided to help every woman leap into the fullness of her most creative and powerful self.
Take a stand with me at SISTER GIANT, and I will do all I can to help you stand just a little bit taller. This seminar can do more than change your life; it can change someone else's as well.
Please join me. And bring your girlfriends....!

Dr. Michael Beckwith's life is a living testament to building spiritual community. In the 1970's he began an inward journey into the teachings of East and West, and today teaches universal truth principles found in the New Thought-Ancient Wisdom tradition of spirituality. Gifted with a vision of a trans-denominational spiritual community, in 1986 he founded the Agape International Spiritual Center upon his faith in that original vision.
In a personal letter to him Coretta Scott King wrote, "I greatly admire what you are doing to bring about the Beloved Community, which is certainly what my dear husband worked for and ultimately gave his life."
Recently described in "What Is Enlightenment?" magazine as a "non-aligned trans-religious progressive," Dr. Beckwith shares his powerful conviction of creating the Beloved Community through his participation on international panels with other peacemakers and spiritual leaders including Dr. T. Ariyarante of Sri Lanka, and Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi. He is co-founder of the Association for Global Thought, an organization dedicated to planetary healing and transformation.
Dr. Beckwith is the originator of the Life Visioning Process, which he teaches throughout the country along with meditation, scientific prayer, and the spiritual benefits of selfless service. He facilitates retreats, workshops and seminars. His books include: "Inspirations of the Heart", "Forty Day Mind Fast Soul Feast", and "A Manifesto of Peace".
Dr. Beckwith's achievement as a humanitarian and emissary of peace have been widely acclaimed. In 2003, his activities were enumerated when he was written into the Congressional Record of the 107th congress. He is the recipient of numerous humanitarian awards, some of which include: The 2004 Africa Peace Award, Thomas Kilgore Prophetic Witness Award, Howard Thurman Stained Glass Window Award by Morehouse College, a commissioned oil portrait for Morehouse's prestigious Hall of preachers, and the Humanitarian Award of the National Conference for Compassion and Justice.
Thousands gather weekly to receive inspiration from Dr. Beckwith at the Agape International Spiritual Center in Culver City, California. Together, Drs. Michael Beckwith and Rickie Byars Beckwith have written lyrics and music performed by the Agape International Choir in concert venues worldwide. Always in demand, their performances inspire peace and goodwill in the global community. They share their lives with their four adult children and six grandchildren.
Mike has a powerful conversation about staying consciously involved in what's going on in our country and our world. He specifically talks about the campaign to create a cabinet level United States Department of Peace and an organization established to support this campaign called The Peace Alliance (www.thepeacealliance.org). He is joined on this show by radio host and activist David Brown (www.davidmatthewbrown.com) who is running the LA Marathon to raise awareness for The Peace Alliance and the Department of Peace campaign.

When Matthew and Terces Engelhart first became sweethearts, they promised to live their lives together following and trusting intuition. Resulting from that commitment was an initial guidance to create a board game and after a year of development, the Abounding River Game was introduced. Abounding River is an interactive way of practicing "being" Abundance in your life. The accompanying Abounding River Logbook is a 42-day practice that's shared with a partner and is meant to guide each individual through exercises in practicing focused attention on qualities we all aspire to: Love & Acceptance, Generosity, Worth, Gratitude, and Creation or Responsibility. Once the game was complete, Matthew and Terces agreed that it would be wonderful to offer a place where people could gather, eat and play the game. Coincidentally, while on their farm in Maui, Terces read a book about live foods and was so inspired she asked Matthew to eat 'live' for 30 days. At the end of the month, they felt so good they decided to create the café and the idea for the first Café Gratitude was born and shortly thereafter, they opened up on 20th and Harrison Streets in San Francisco as a live foods Café.
We choose to work in partnership with vendors, customers, and the community in making choices that support the environment we share. Plastic containers & water bottles have been eliminated from our retail store and we often request that new & treasured vendors repackage their products in cellophane, or glass just for us. But that's just a start. Here's just a short list of environmental commitments to which we're steadfastly loyal:
* If the organic variety of produce is not available, we do not choose conventional.
*
We use non bleached 100% cotton cloths for napkins that, after used, are sent to become rags in the auto industry. This creates an additional life for that product and eliminating the use of harmful chemicals like bleach for laundering.
* We filter our own water at all locations.
* All our food scraps are composted and are often sent to the Be Love Farm in Vacaville.
* We recycle our paper and cardboard.
* Our dishes are washed with the most environmentally-friendly products.
* All of our books, private labels, administrative documents and our menus are printed on recycled paper with soy based ink.
* We take pride in our high standards, and we thank you for every dollar you share with us, further empowering our investment in the environment.
The community we have built is inspirational and we thank you for being a part of it. The gratuity that you offer your server is then shared with every hourly employee who worked that day. This means that every baker, dishwasher, kitchen line, bartender, host, and food prep share in the generosity you bestow on your server. You not only provide for one, you provide for all. We have made it a practice to help one another in times of financial challenge and personal growth, during addiction recovery, healing from disease, repairing a car or replacing a stolen bicycle. We support one another's artistic performances, share housing and even transportation. By experiencing the power of community, we take care of each other, knowing that the same support is available in return. Imagine EVERYONE working in an environment where, everyday, you are celebrated and held as nothing short of amazing, able to work in an environment where every day you are created as great!
BE LOVE AT THE FARM:
Be Love Farm is nestled in between the hills in Pleasant Valley, CA and is an extension of the Café Gratitude Sacred Commerce experiment. On 21 acres of organic farmland, We live in community and practice a sustainable lifestyle while growing food using\the biodynamic method (as prescribed by Rudolph Steiner in 1924). On this rich alluvial soil, we grow fruits, nuts, vegetables, melons, greens, herbs, and citrus supplying Café Gratitude with an ever increasing supply. Please ask your server about what produce is currently coming from Be Love. Currently, we are planting new trees, and building structures for housing and food storage. We are in the beginning stages of creating an apprenticeship program where participants live in an awakened community while producing food in a mindful and sustainable way. We are up for inspiring an agrarian renaissance.
CAFE GRATITUDE AS A SCHOOL OF TRANSFORMATION AND A EXPERIMENT IN SACRED COMMERCE.
Café Gratitude is an experiment in a business model called Sacred Commerce where an atmosphere of transformation is created in the work environment. At Cafe Gratitude, all employees are signing themselves up for a curriculum of practicing "being" that their life is great now. It is a practice in how life transforms when a community focuses on the qualities of Love, Spirit, The Divine. Each day, we practice shifting our attention to love and acceptance, gratitude, generosity, abundance, and the privilege of serving others. This is the context of our work. A Sacred Commerce business is a safe container of unconditional love where transparency is encouraged and held as a courageous act . Employees partake in a "Clearing" process before each shift to distinguish how the habitual mind is creating separation from our experience of oneness. This way, employees choose to be present and engaged in sacred service with our customers. The "Question Of The Day" is a vital part of the clearing and is something we share with our customers as well. We know that our Sacred Commerce view is just our perspective. We don't claim it as the truth because we understand there are many valid views of life and business. This is simply the one we are practicing as an ever-evolving experiment. We do, however, see amazing results. Every day, we hear about miracles, personal growth, healing and deepened connections throughout our community. Yes, we love and appreciate the opportunity to open our doors seven days a week and serve the best organic food available, but even more we are inspired by the awakening of our collective consciousness. Standing in the possibility that we are responsible for our experience of life, we encourage our community to focus their attention on qualities that inspire and empower, not just at work, but in all areas of their lives. Founders Matthew and Terces offer monthly workshops on ‘being abundance,' fulfilling love's promise in relationship and Sacred Commerce. Bi-annually, they offer yoga, live food retreats and workshops on their organic farm on Maui, and are also available for workshops and trainings with private groups and businesses.
